How To Prevent Cavities

Dental caries have been a global health concern for many years now. It’s the most frequent non-contagious chronic disease, affecting children and adults with multiple negative consequences. Moreover, it has also been a general health issue due to its effects on diet, digestion, appearance, and other systemic diseases.

Thereby, it is not a surprise that many experts and organizations have suggested various measures to reduce its risk and avoid complications. At Chandler Dentistry we are your local experts in the Chandler, AZ area for all of your oral health needs including those pesky cavities!

What are cavities?

Dental caries is a multifactorial disease that occurs when your teeth lose minerals due to bacteria in your mouth. Without the proper dental plaque and leftovers removal, the bacteria in your mouth can turn food into acid, inducing a process called demineralization. Cavities are the result of this demineralization when the problem persists, creating holes in your teeth structure.

Fortunately, cavities are a progressive and slow disease, and, more importantly, they are preventable with the appropriate preventive measures.

What can I do to prevent cavities?

Next, you have 5 tips, scientifically supported, that you can follow to reduce the risk of caries in your family and your life:

Brush at least twice a day

Dental hygiene is the most effective method to avoid cavities and their complications. It is also essential in the prevention of gum disease and other oral conditions.

Experts recommend you brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes straight. Also, use the appropriate tooth brushing technique by angulating your toothbrush at 45 degrees to your gums, applying gentle pressure with back and forward strokes.

Finally, do not forget to brush your teeth at night, and remember to use fluoride toothpaste every time to prevent demineralization and build strong teeth.

Improve your diet

Diet has a direct impact on dental cavities. Having a high-sugar content diet increases your risk of having cavities and gum disease enormously. Try reducing sugar intake in both drinks and meals, and avoid giving sugar incentives to your children. Instead, search for more healthy snacks such as fruits, yogurt, or nuts. If you cannot help it, promote their brushing right after eating candy.

Schedule a dentist appointment regularly

Tartar and dental plaque formation are the chief causes of cavities. Unfortunately, once the tartar is built up, it cannot be removed at home. Thereby, you need to maintain a regular consultation and professional cleaning regularly with your dentist. If you are in need for a new dentist we have a special offer for you! Fluoride is a powerful ally against dental cavities. Ask your dentist about dental sealants and fluoride gel applications to built keep your teeth strong and healthy. Most of these measures are preventive treatments that can reduce the risk of having decay and demineralization drastically.

Keep yourself hydrated

Do your best to rinse with plenty of water and drink a lot of it. A dry mouth is a strong giveaway for dental caries. Try to rinse your mouth with water in those opportunities when you cannot brush. This is useful when you are on the run or after lunch at work.
