Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?
Preventing Pain and Protecting Your Smile
Wisdom teeth often cause problems because most mouths don't have enough room to accommodate them. When they emerge, they can push against neighboring teeth, cause crowding, become impacted (trapped beneath the gumline), or create hard-to-clean areas that lead to tooth decay.
The earlier wisdom teeth are removed, the easier the procedure and recovery tend to be. When tooth roots are still small (typically in your late teens or early 20s), they're shorter and easier to extract than fully developed roots.

The Removal Process
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Before the procedure, we take digital X-rays to assess the position of your wisdom teeth and how many you have (most people have between one and four). You'll be placed under anesthesia nitrous oxide or IV sedation, depending on your case for your comfort throughout the procedure.
Your dentist will make a small incision in the gum if needed, remove the tooth whole or in sections, and place stitches to help the area heal. The procedure typically takes 45 minutes to an hour. You'll need a dedicated driver to take you home.
Simple vs. Surgical Extractions
Understanding Your Options
Not all extractions are the same. A simple extraction involves removing a visible tooth that has fully erupted. A surgical extraction is required for teeth that are impacted (partially or fully beneath the gumline), or when a tooth has broken and only a root remains.
Whether your wisdom teeth require a simple or surgical approach, our team will explain the process in detail and ensure you're comfortable with the plan before we begin.

Recovery & Aftercare
Healing Comfortably After Extraction
For the first few days after extraction, stick to soft foods and avoid brushing the extraction site. After the second day, you may gradually resume your normal oral hygiene routine. Some jaw soreness and numbness in the lips and chin for several hours after the procedure is normal.
We'll provide you with full aftercare instructions and be available for any questions during your recovery. Most patients return to normal activities within a few days.
General Tooth Extractions
In addition to wisdom teeth removal, Chandler Dentistry also provides general tooth extraction services. While we always strive to save your natural teeth, there are situations where extraction is the best option for your overall oral health.
Why Would I Need To Get A Tooth Extracted?
Tooth extraction may be necessary for a variety of reasons, including severe decay that cannot be repaired with a filling or crown, advanced gum disease that has loosened a tooth, overcrowding that requires removal for orthodontic treatment, or a tooth that has broken below the gumline and cannot be restored. In each case, Dr. Grover will discuss your options and recommend the best course of action.
Post-Extraction Care
After a tooth extraction, proper aftercare is essential for a smooth recovery. Bite gently on gauze to control bleeding, apply ice packs to reduce swelling, eat soft foods for the first few days, and avoid using straws or smoking, as the suction can dislodge the blood clot. We will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions and are always available if you have questions during your recovery.
